With velvety burgundy petals and a quiet mystery, it’s often called “wake-robin” for its habit of blooming just as the robins return. A flower with flair and forest gossip, whispered among spring leaves.
Common in moist deciduous forests. It bears a solitary flower with three deep red petals; the fetid scent attracts carrion flies for pollination (gobotany.nativeplanttrust.org).
