Center Street Soap Co. started with an itch Joy Benzing couldn’t solve. After years of irritated skin from commercial detergent “soaps,” she found the real thing at a local farmers’ market and started experimenting in her own kitchen, building a gentle recipe that holds onto its natural glycerin instead of stripping it away. She now runs the company with Tori out of Manchester, Connecticut. Every bar is small-batch cold-process soap, made with sustainable oils and butters and fragrances free of phthalates and parabens. The retained glycerin means the soap hydrates as it cleans. It’s a women-owned shop that collaborates with other female artists and donates its soap scraps to the Eco-Soap Bank, more than 2,000 pounds so far, to help fight preventable disease and give women in developing nations a way to earn a living.
